Hair Replacement Therapy For Women - It's About Time!

A beautiful head of hair has always played a major role in a woman's self-esteem and self-image. This has made the market for women's hair replacement one of the fastest growing industries worldwide. In some hair replacement centers, statistics show that over 50% of their clientele are now women.

Within the last few years, the hair replacement industry realized that the same methods being used on men would work for women. This opened up a whole new source of clientele for hair loss centers and an immense opportunity for women to maintain their crowning glory.

Research has proven that certain hair replacement therapies not only duplicate hair, but the scalp as well. With this discovery, women now have the ability to do everything with their hair replacements that they could with their own natural hair.

There are a variety of reasons why women lose their hair, whereas in men it is an almost 100% hereditary factor. Women's hair loss can be attributed to depression, stress, child birth, menopause, serious illness, hereditary conditions, over processing their hair, just to name a few. Remarkably, studies show that up to 50% of women experience some sort of hair loss in their lifetime.

Women don't have to hide in the shadows any longer. There is help for them in the many hair replacement centers and clinics across the nation, ranging from re-growth therapies to medical hair transplantation. Many of the centers adapted to their newfound female clientele by staffing women consultants, offering private waiting rooms, and providing total privacy in the styling rooms.

Hair Replacement Costs on the Rise

To anyone who has purchased a hair replacement system or have had a contract renewal you know that the prices have gone up considerably in the last 8 months. There is historical information to show that this is not a new phenomenon.

Originally almost all hair replacement systems were only available to the wealthy in or within access to major metropolitan areas such as New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. The reason being, that's where the wig makers were. Prior to the industrialization of hair replacements they were made by independent wig makers across the country and around the world. In the 1960's the wig market began to grow with the increase in demand for ready made wigs. Those products were primarily coming out of Japan.

When the Japanese economy really started to boom after the Olympics in Tokyo 1964 much of the low tech products coming out of Japan moved their production to Korea. Korea's economy was still based on lower tech production of goods and it became the new base for hair replacement and hair goods production. Japan became known for hi quality High Tech products and automobiles. During the years that followed Korea became the Mecca of hair replacement production and the demand for men's hair replacements started to grow.

As materials and technique became upgraded so did the prices. In 1988 Seoul Korea hosted the Olympics and thus began the move from Korean production of hair replacements to China. During this time we also saw an increase in production in other countries such as the Philippines, Haiti and Mexico. The best quality of these 3 countries came out of the Philippines but due to strict government involvement with unions the Philippines could not match the pricing and soon the quality of the hair replacements coming out of China.

Well, here we are 2008 and the Olympics were just hosted in Beijing China. The Chinese government has been in a mad scramble over the past few years to get the country ready to host the games and with that there has been an increase in more High Tech product production and less emphasis on the Low Tech product production like hair replacements and again an increase in the demand for cheaper product and a decrease in availability. Once there becomes a supply and demand issue, prices increase. Wholesale companies can no longer get good quality at a low price and just like everything else the end consumer pays for these increases in the end.

Now the question is; "Did the prices for hair replacements really go up that much?" The answer; "No not really." However, there is validity to the supply and demand issues causing a decrease in good quality human hair creating price increases in raw materials. In the end the consumer has been forced to the internet for their hair replacement needs where prices are still within reach for the average consumer and in this economy the consumer needs all the help they can get.

Male Hair Loss Product - What Options Are Available?

First and foremost, it is important to understand that male hair loss is much different than female hair loss. In males, the hair loss is according to specific patterns, and hence their hair loss is called as male pattern baldness. Men generally lose hair systematically on their scalp, either through the sides of their head, or above the forehead line, or at the center of the head in a circular fashion. Of course, the thinning of hair occurs on the entire scalp, but in particular areas the hair loss is more pronounced. Whereas in women, the hair loss is all over. There is no pattern baldness in women. For that reason, male hair loss products are also totally different from female hair loss products.

That was important to be addressed at the very start, because there are many men who do not mind which hair loss product they are using. This shows them no results at the end of day, adding more to their worry. When dealing with male pattern baldness, it is necessary to choose specific products targeted for the male scalps.

So, let us see what options are available.

1. Minoxidil - Minoxidil is the first drug that comes to mind when discussing male hair loss treatment. This is commercially available as Rogaine in the US and as Regaine outside the US. This is a hair tonic, which is meant to be topically applied on the scalp uniformly and not just in the areas where the hair loss is occurring. Minoxidil is available for both men and women actually, in concentrations of 5 and 2% respectively. But in women, this drug has shown many adverse side effects including low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, chest pain, etc. In men, there are no major side effects apart from an itchy sensation on the scalp till the scalp get acclimatized to the drug and a spell of hair loss before the growth begins to take place. For men, Rogaine is available in the form of liquid as well as foam.

2. Finasteride - Finasteride is sold in the commercial market under the brand name of Propecia. Propecia is available as a tablet, and the principle of its working is to alter the hormonal balances that help to increase the growth of hair. When men are younger, they have more testosterone in their bodies which keep the hair healthy too. But as they grow, the testosterone converts into dihydrotestosterone, which is not specific to hair growth. That is a part of the reason why the hair loss occurs more in men as they age. Finasteride tries to rectify this balance of the male body. Propecia also has lesser side effects than Rogaine and is also effective in a larger number of men, for a longer period.

3. Treatment methods - There are many other male specific treatments in vogue nowadays, including the hair weaving (technically, hair transplant) and the hair replacement methods. These are cosmetic methods, though; they do not allow the hair to grow naturally. Hence, they are good if you are looking for just an appearance. In your own mind, you know what you have on is not your real hair.
